Master Class Modern Wind Turbine Technology
From complex design theory to practical, real world understanding
Most wind turbines look similar, but the technology may be very different. And with that the cost and value of wind energy generated will be different. The design drivers for modern wind turbines and the risks to current designs will be explained.
After the course, you’ll understand the technology and physics that has driven the sector towards the products we see in the market. Examples of serial design flaws in commercial products are analyzed and explained. Common root causes of these large quality issues are discussed. A technical background is not required.

The course content is broad and will touch on all relevant technology. For all who are working with or close to the wind energy sector, or for those who are considering to move closer to the wind energy sector. After the course you will have a better understanding of the wind turbine technology and the challenges and opportunities.
Differences between onshore and offshore turbine technology will be explained.
The breaks in between the training sessions will be used for a visit to the Wind Experience Center and a visit to a nearby wind farm. Visit the wind Experience Center.

Learn to assess the variable impacts of wind projects and create effective, sustainable policies for your community. Bridging the gap between complex turbine technology and effective local policy.
Different turbine architectures will be shown. Design options and choices of wind turbine manufacturers and project developers will be explained. These choices determine the economics of the project. But, the same choices also determine the impacts to the direct environment, like visual hinder and noise pollution.
The course will explain the effects of design choices. The wind is a variable energy source. The course will explain how also some of the environmental impacts are highly variable and complex to predict.
The course will give you a better understanding of technology choices and place you in a better position to balance the impact to different interests.

Dive into the giants of the sea
Explore the specialized engineering, design drivers, and innovations pushing offshore rotors beyond the 200-meter mark.
Offshore wind energy has developed rapidly towards large scale and low cost. The wind turbine technology has evoluted towards a separate branch – turbine architectures and turbine components are different from onshore. The challenging accessibility of the offshore sites for installation and maintenance and high costs for the foundation has driven upscaling of the wind turbine and it’s rotor beyond 200m diameter.
The turbines and the key components have been designed specifically for offshore. The scale is too large for most onshore sites. The large scale has made offshore wind energy a low cost energy source.
The course will address the specific wind turbine technology challenges offshore. Innovations will be highlighted. You’ll have a better understanding of the technology, design drivers and physical background. And you’ll learn about quality risks and challenges, and the value of validation.
